The OwlHoot Manifesto
OwlHoot Games LLC is an independent, preservation-first video game development studio. We operate as a structural antidote to the modern industry’s reliance on predatory monetization, live-service fragility, and sudden software erasure.
Born from the Ashes of 2014
In July 2010, Nightclub City pioneered the social business-simulation genre. At its peak, it pulled in millions of monthly active users, allowing them to manage virtual venues to the pulse of real-world licensed music. It was a cultural phenomenon that we deeply loved.
But by March 2014, the harsh realities of live-service hosting set in. Due to industry shifts and circumstances likely far beyond the original developers' control, the servers were permanently deactivated. We hold no ill will toward the original studio—building and sustaining online games is incredibly difficult—but the fallout for the community was devastating. Millions of players lost their digital progress, their investments, and the vibrant venues they had built overnight. A beloved piece of interactive art was simply erased.
OwlHoot Games was created to help establish a new norm to prevent this from happening again.
By pioneering local-first architectures and an unwavering commitment to preservation, we are building a framework where history isn't deleted when a server budget runs out. We believe that when you buy a game, you should own it permanently. Our games are built to survive without us.
Operational Ethics
DRM-Free & Preservation First
We target Itch.io and GOG over algorithm-heavy platforms like Steam. We offer a Perpetual Play Guarantee—you own your software forever. We utilize crowdsourced QA with a "Fun-First" Exploit Policy: if a victimless bug brings joy, it becomes a feature.
The Immortalization Protocol
We reject the "Auteur" celebrity developer archetype. Freelance artists, indie composers, and early altruistic donors are permanently woven into the digital fabric of the universe as VIP patrons or lore characters, celebrated on the Master Studio Plaque.
Meet the Founder
Michael Figueroa Acosta
CEO & Lead Developer
Michael brings a highly unique, multidisciplinary background to independent game development. With formal education in IT, game design and computer engineering, he approaches software architecture with a deeply technical mindset.
However, his true edge in building management simulation games comes from his real-world career. Initially, he has worked in studios as QA Tester starting in 2015 as well as being part of the local game developer chapter's secretary chair in Puerto Rico. Later, he moved to Florida to work for big companies, holding 5 jobs at a time, while pursuing his degree at Full Sail University. Later, moves to Texas where he currently resides and works, has found work in the industry as a QA Lead and Designer, as well as the location where he establishes his first studio, Owlhoot Games LLC. Having managed complex physical assets, logistics, and guest experiences at massive scale in his previous jobs, he translates actual operational logistics directly into the authentic management mechanics found in titles like Nightclubs: PRSM.
He still supports a spanish gaming website as webmaster and content creator & writer for Tu Zona Gamer, an opportunity that approached him after working as a collaborator with Yo Soy Un Gamer. As a single-member studio head, Michael architects everything from Unity C# frameworks and dynamic FMOD audio integration to UI/UX web deployment and narrative design, ensuring a singular, uncompromised creative vision.
A Lifelong Engine Lineage
The path into game development didn't begin in a university lab—it started in childhood with a pirated copy of RPG Maker XP, which turned into a supported engine starting with RPG Maker 2003. That scrappy, unauthorized download was the necessary spark that ignited a lifelong obsession with interactive design. While following the RPG Maker lineage across the ages, Michael continuously expanded his technical vocabulary across the indie spectrum. Today, the studio's stack is highly specialized, moving away from grid-bound constraints to focus on fully modular mechanics and robust 3D simulations.
Hardware Research
Practices on a physical Pioneer DDJ-FLX4 controller to understand tactile DJ mechanics for rhythm gameplay.
His Studio
Works with Unity, RPG Maker, GameMaker Studio, and learning Unreal Engine 5 to help the studio grow.
Base of Operations
Located in Fort Worth, Texas. Operates the studio as a proudly independent, self-funded entity.

A Trial by Fire: The Road to Launch
While the conceptual framework for our flagship project traces its roots back to 2019, the timeline to a formal commercial launch spanned nearly a decade due to an extraordinary series of personal, financial, and technical crises.
The Overwork Phase
Managed five simultaneous jobs across, severely restricting active dev sprint windows to midnight hours.
The Displacement
Contracted COVID-19 on Day 1 of regional lockdown. The resulting financial crisis and housing instability halted all pipelines.
Texas & Data Loss
Relocated to Texas. A catastrophic hard drive failure during the move erased all historical source code.
Recovery & Shield
Rebooted the codebase entirely. Formed OwlHoot Games LLC to shield the IP, modernized the stack with Unity, and achieved stabilization.
Technical Architecture
Clean boundaries to bypass historical development traps.
The Unity Pivot
Pivoted from GameMaker to utilize Unity's advanced NavMesh AI, solving the complex dynamic pathfinding required for massive nightclub crowds.
Hardware Reverse-Engineering
Utilizing professional technician diagnostics on physical DJ turntable decks to ensure rhythm mechanics map with absolute physical accuracy.
Intentional Restraint
Benched Unreal Engine 5. We prioritize mid-tier accessibility and performance via modular Synty assets and FMOD audio over exclusionary visual bloat.
The Version Roadmap
A strike against sequel churn. One unified living client.
The Free Era: Establishment
100% Free Alpha. No paywalls. Community testing while we build our bespoke 3D art style.
The Commercial Era: Season 1
Formal launch. Synty placeholders removed. Deep progression mechanics and world-building objectives introduced into the lore.
Milestones v2.0+ [Classified]
Long-term seasonal mechanics and advanced platform expansions remain strictly under wraps until the Version 1.0 commercial launch.
